Contract Notes

Matthew Stafford signed a one year, $55 million contract extension with the Rams on May 21, 2026. Stafford has $90 million in guarantees and $50 million of the $55 million new money is fully guaranteed at signing. Stafford's 2026 and 2027 salaries are fully guaranteed at signing. There is a fully guaranteed $5 million roster bonus due on the 5th day of the 2027 league year. There is a $5 million roster bonus due on the 3rd day of the 2028 league year that will become fully guaranteed if on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2027 league year. There is no offset to the roster bonus if Stafford is released. There are multiple option bonuses in the contract, $24 million in options in 2026 and $35 million in options in 2027. These options are all due by the start of the regular season. The team can opt to decline the options in increments of $6 million per option in 2026 and $8.75 million per option in 2027 to determine how they want to manage their cap charges. Each declined option would increase Stafford's base salary by the corresponding amount if the Rams choose to do that. Stafford's 2026 cap number should remain unchanged and the Rams will only pay $2 million more on the 2027 salary cap to have Stafford on the roster rather than letting his contract expire.

Stafford's contract is designed for him to be designated a post June 1 release in 2028 through the use of a $100 million future guarantee trigger if the team fails to release him by the 10th day of the 2028 league year. The Rams can extend him before that time. If all options are exercised by the Rams his dead money in 2028 will be $22.99 million and in 2029 it will be $35.4 million. Another $5 million in incentives are available.

On April 29, 2025 Matt Stafford signed a renegotiated 2 year contract with the Los Angeles Rams worth $80 million in new money with $40 million guaranteed at signing. Stafford has a $40 million salary guarantee that will vest on the 5th day of the 2026 league year. The contract contains a series of team option bonuses (8 in total). Matt Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams agreed to a revised contract on July 31, 2024. The total value remains the same, the revised agreement pushed $5 million forward from 2025 and lowered the cap charge for 2024 by $3.33 million. Stafford received $40 million fully guaranteed at signing including a $23.5 million salary in 2024 and a $4.0 million roster bonus in 2025. Matt Stafford signed a four year extension worth $160 million with the Rams on March 19, 2022. Per PFT the contract contains $120 million in guarantees of which $63 million is guaranteed at signing. Stafford receives a $60 million signing bonus and his 2022 and 2023 base salaries are guaranteed. If Stafford is on the roster on the 3rd day of the 2023 league year his 2023 option bonus and 2024 base salary will be fully guaranteed. There are 3rd day of the league year roster bonuses in both 2025 and 2026. Stafford and the Rams agreed to a new two year $80 million contract in 2025. The new contract has $40 million in guarantees. This is a $26 million raise from his prior contract with $17 million coming in the first year. Stafford has multiple option bonuses worth up to $24 million in both 2025 and 2026.  There are multiple void years for salary cap purposes. Stafford's cap number ion 2025 decreased by $2.2 million as a result of the new contract.
